toilet training,the story now

last year during my long break, we had tried to toilet train arshad. the experience was shared here. he wasn’t receptive and both of us got annoyed at each other at times. him with me asking if he needed to go to the toilet and bringing him to the toilet many times…of course the accidents. when term started i gave ourselves a break. there were other issues we had to settle at the start of the year.

but the conversations didnt stop. once in a while we would talk to him about being a ‘big boy’ and not wearing diapers.

then one saturday, we went to a friend’s birthday party. there were other kids his age..boys his age and i dont know how it started, but parents do talk about parenting when we gather right, so we sort of checked on each others’ toilet training progress..and in the process pointed to arshad the other boys who have been toilet trained.

a fellow mommy commented “arshad looks so big now. i like his jeans (skinny jeans)…..but that thing showing (the diaper, coz shad wears his jeans low on the waist) spoils it”..

i think arshad heard that.

and all of our conversation on toilet training perhaps. understood all of it. then suddenly decided, when we got home that day, that he didnt want to wear diapers anymore!

when previously it was me asking him every once in a while if he needs to go to the toilet to pee..and he would get annoyed, now he readily goes to the toilet. he wakes up dry in the morning, and tells me first thing, he needs to pee. now he goes to the toilet on his own and does not even want the little kiddy toilet seat attachment thing that goes on top of the toilet bowl. he would insist he does everything himself - get on the toilet bowl, flush and wash himself. (ye lah,’big boy’ now), tho we will still have an adult to watch over him in the bathroom.

a friend shared that with boys, toilet training can be harder, but when they are ready, they will, out of the blue, tell you that they are! maybe this is it, eh?

i think we are finally making a good progress here after many trials and stalls! so, it is a big relief! phew!
